Scout Survival Skills Weekend

During the last weekend in March 2014 we went to the Ennerdale Camp site for a survival skills weekend.

Four leaders attended and 8 Scouts and we are happy to report that everyone had a great time learning new skills and just being outdoors almost all the time.

It was great to see Scout Leader Gavin return after a long absence and together with our newly
appointed assistant leader John Leach they formed a good partnership and imparted a lot of knowledge to the Scouts.

Mike and Lou were also there in a support capacity.

We bedded down in the bunkhouse at night and Saturday food was provided from a central kitchen. On Saturday the skills imparted were axemanship, setting up bivvies using both plastic sheeting and natural materials.

They learned how to find north without a compass, how to set a map and how to use a marching compass. They learned about different  trees and types of wood and Saturday evening sat round a camp fire toasting toes before retiring to the indoors for a big meal. One or two fell asleep on chairs prior to bed time!

Sunday we learned how to make fires using things other than matches, ie flint and steel and we were successful.

Once we had a good fire going and lots of glowing embers everyone packed their own Sunday lunch in tinfoil and cooked it on the fire. Chicken potatoes and veg wrapped in cabbage was a popular option.

The site and bunkhouse were cleaned up and all left on time.

Next term will see us putting those skills acquired to the test when we sleep under the stars in our shelters!
Date to be advised.

Yellow Beaver's Log Chew for 27th March 2014

Dear Mums & Dads & Beavers

Happy Mother's Day to all the Mums for tomorrow.  We hope you like your paper weight for the desk or to secure that huge pile of papers in the kitchen.

Some fabulous news ......... our website is now up and running:

www.2ndmaryport.co.uk

Please have a look and let us know what you think?  There is still some information to add in the Cub & Scout Sections as well as the Gallery, but otherwise it is pretty much in the final stage. If you notice any obvious mistakes, let me know and I can correct them.

Now ...... to the Egg Heads that you planted 2 weeks ago - how are they getting on?  If you bring them back next week, we can see which one has grown the most and have a little prize for it

We have two more weeks left at Beavers for this term: 3rd & 10th April.  I have decided to meet on the 10th even though some schools will have finished.

We will have one week off (Maundy Thursday) and come back on 24th April, (although some schools may be closed), so please make a note on your calender

We will see how the weather goes and maybe we can get outside somewhere on that last night (10th), but I won't know till the week before, so this is just to put you on standby!

On the new website are all the Beaver Badge requirements, so please do have a look and see what you can do over the holidays.  Most are pretty straight-forward and you could have a few more badges when we come back for the summer term without too much effort. We just don't have the time to get it all done in the weekly meetings, so - over to you.....

Parents' Rota - we only have one or two names on the parent rota for the Summer Term and some Mums/Dads have come at least 3 times, so please will you take your turn and sign up?  There is no pressure to join in, but I MUST have another adult present to be able to operate within the rules.  it would be a shame to have to send everyone home for want of someone to stay for an hour.  Thanks in advance

Have you left? I still have two Beavers who have been missing for 4 weeks - have you left? can you let me know please if your child is coming back?  We have a big waiting list and lots of keen little children waiting to join us.

Yellow Beaver's Log Chew for 20th March 2014

Hello Beavers, Mums & Dads

Thank you for remembering the pebbles this week, we have prepared them and will be making a lovely Mother's Day present next week.  We hope you like it .....

Everybody planted some mustard seeds in their egg shells this week.

If you keep the cotton wool moist, the seeds will germinate in the next couple of days and then sprout.  If you can bring them back in two weeks, then we can see which face has the longest hair on it.  I will organise a little prize as I know how competitive the Beavers are!

I don't have any details yet, but there will be a Parade on Saturday 26th April 2014 in the town, which we, as well as other organisations have been invited to attend as part of the WWI centenary events.  As soon as I get more details, I will let you know.

Just another reminder that if your child is not coming back to Beavers, PLEASE let me know.  I will be taking on more Beavers after Easter and it would be very useful if you could let me know asap

Yellow Beaver's Log Chew for 13th March 2014

Hello Beavers, Mums and Dads

Well the weather has not been too nice has it this week? You can hardly see Scotland most days!

Well, we all learned some new skills last week - a thumb knot and a figure of eight knot. Well done to all the Beavers, we will have another try this week coming, just so that everyone learns it.

Next week, all Beavers need to bring a large flat pebble, just smaller than a side plate.

We have a Quiz Night fund raiser for the Group on 26th March 2014 at The Bounty Inn, Netherton, Maryport at 8.00pm.  If you would like to  make up a team, just go along.

Also, just to let you know, we have our 75th Anniversary Celebration Dinner on 26th April 2014, please give Mike a call on 01900 818143 or email maryportscouts@yahoo.com if you would like to know more.  If you know anyone who has been in the Scout Group in the last 75 years - please let them know that we would like to see them

If you son is loosing interest and no longer wishes to come, would you be good enough to either email or telephone me to let me know.  I am due to contact the new intake shortly for admission after Easter, so it would be really useful to know what the situation is.........

Yellow Beaver's Log Chew 27th February 2014

Dear Beavers, Mums & Dads

We hope you enjoyed our Banana Night last night and especially the Banana Splits we made during the evening. Thanks to Nicola for helping us with these

Ethan, one of our Scouts has joined us for a (minimum) 6 week stay while he is working on his Community Badge.  Welcome to him.

We have received our framed Certificate from the Toilet Twinning Organisation confirming we are now twinned with a toilet in Napal.  If you look in the loo, the certificate is on the window ledge and you can see what it looks like.  Thanks once again.  We are feeling very flushed with success!

-----------------------

Just to remind you that next week, 6th March 2014 is our Night Hike along the Prom.  This will count towards 2 badges - Hikes Away and Adventurous Activities.

Each Beaver will need a torch (more for their own re-assurance, I think) as well as a warm coat, and hat and gloves if it is unusually chilly.

I have some safety equipment that we will while we are walking to  make sure no-one gets lost.

I will arrange for a hot snack at the end for everyone, so it would be very useful if you could let me know who (Beaver &/or Adults) is coming so that I can do the shopping.

It will also mean we are not hanging around waiting for anyone if I know your child cannot make it.

We will set off promptly at 6.30pm and walk towards the Golf Course.

I will need to have 5 parents with me during the evening.

If you are coming along, you do not need to fill in a form.

However, if your child is coming on their own, you do need to fill in the attached Activity Form, giving your consent and bring it along on the night and hand it to me.

The Scout Association Rules say that I cannot take your child without the form.

So - I am very excited about our first Night Hike that the Colony has every undertaken and can't wait.

If you are not sure about the meeting point - please ring me

I will be there from 6.10pm waiting for you

Yellow Beaver's Log Chew for 13th February 2014

Dear Mums, Dads & Beavers

We hope you enjoyed the Valentine cards that came home last night.  I think they were of a very high standard and all the Beavers tried very hard

The Beavers were quite mad last night - you could tell that a school holiday starts today!  Hope you enjoy the week together, (more about what to do below).  I am away seeking some sun for a few days, but will be back in good time for 27th February.

On Thursday, 6th March, we will be taking part in our exciting Night-time Hike.  I will give you all the details about this after the holiday. This is part of our Adventure Badge and will take place during our normal meeting time 6.30pm-7.30pm).

We will need about 6 adults that night, so if you are free, then please do come along with us and enjoy the walk

There will be a 'Permission Form' to complete as well.  I have purchased some special safety equipment and the Beavers just need to wrap up warm and bring a torch, nature will do the rest for us that night and I am sure it will be very exciting.

Also - we will be having a Sleep-Over in May time, but more details on that will follow in due course.

Thank you to everyone to saved pennies for our Toilet Twinning charity.  We met the target of £60 and collected another £8 on top to pay for a giant toilet roll as well.  I have sent off the money today and hopefully a certificate will come back shortly, which I will display in the hall.  The Beavers can all be very proud of themselves for making other childrens' lives easier.  This goes towards our Global Challenge Badge.

Half Term Holiday .............................. Please do have a go at some badges next week.  If you haven't got the badge book to look at, you can check on-line at www.scouts.org.uk.

There are some easy ones that you could have a go at:

Animal Friend (Download workbook to complete)
Experiment
Creative
Hobbies (do you belong to Karate, football, rugby, tennis clubs, Ride a horse? then this
                badge is for you?)
Imagination
Healthy eating (Download workbook to complete)
Musician
IT
Swimmer

All of these badges are designed to be done as individuals at home, so get cracking and bring me back the 'proof' you have done it after the Half Term and then you can have your badges!!!!!

Yellow Beaver's Log Chew for 30th January 2014

Dear Mums, Dads and Beavers

On the 30th, we had out joint meeting with the Cubs and it was really nice to see our  old Beavers officially swim up to Cubs and be invested

We then had our own investiture for James, Henry & Luke and we wish them all well

As it was Chinese  New Year, we made lanterns and I hope you managed to get them home without them getting too wet or collapsing.  There are a few left behind on the notice-board if you want to have a look and see if it belongs to you? Gong Hoi Fat Choy

We have had the majority of the milk bottles back that we are collecting pennies in for the toilet twinning scheme - only 6 more to come back.  Please can you try and remember next week, so that I can get the toilet ordered and sent off by Half Term.

We do not have any parents signed up for 7th March, 20th March, 27th March or 3rd April, so if you have not volunteered to take a turn yet, please would you do so on one of those 4 nights.

12 Beavers and 2 Cubs  had a lovely time at Funtastic on Saturday and everyone went home tired and happy.  I am told that the new one at Lillyhall is very good, so next time we will try there.

Don't forget to start to do some work at home on those badges like swimming, music, IT, hobbies, imagination - just being me the proof and I will give you the badge.  Its as simple as that...........

That's all for this week - see you Thursday

Yellow Beaver's Log Chew for 23rd January 2013

ello Mums, Dads and Beavers

Hope you enjoyed our meeting last night?

Thank you to Mrs Thomson & Mrs Fearon who stopped to help last night and our regular Mr McIlroy.

There are no names on the list for after Half Term, so please can I ask you all to have a look as you come in and put your name up to attend. Mums or Dads are welcome.

Well - next week (during our usual meeting times) - we are having a joint evening with the Cub Pack. This is so that the last batch of 4 Beavers who have now completed their link to the Cub Scout Pack can have their official 'Swimming Up Ceremony' at the end of which, they will be invested as Cubs.

Also, we will be having an Investiture Ceremony for James, Henry and Luke, so please all try and be on time on Thursday.

We are doing well with the collection for the pennies for the Toilet Twinning and please can I have your bottles back by 30th January 2014, so that I can send off the money. I will ask the Beavers to vote for a country that they want to twin our Scott House toilet with and let you know the result in due course.

On Saturday, 1st February 2014, we are going to FUNTASTIC.  For the names I have so far -  some have paid and some have completed the 'permission form', so please check with me this coming week, so that I can get it all ready before the trip. If I do not have a completed 'permission form' then I am afraid I cannot take your child.

It was great to have a full Colony attending this week, let's try and keep it up for the next couple of week.

See you soon, Yellow Beaver

Yellow Beaver's Log Chew for 16th January 2014

Dear Mums, Dads & Beavers

Welcome to our new Beavers who started this week: Cohen, Owen and Mitchell and as one of the very bright lever Beavers pointed out to me, baby Beavers are called Kittens!  Well done.

Thank you to Yellow Beaver who came along and helped so that I could spend a bit of time with the new Mums.

Are there any more Beavers interested in the trip to FUNTASTIC play session on Saturday, 1st February between 3.00pm & 5.00pm?  I only have 6 names down on my list, which is a little disappointing really.

If you would like to come along and join us, it is £6.50p for the session.  Bring along the money next Thursday, 23rd January and I will give you a 'permission' form to complete, (which you must return to me before the day).

How are the pennies (for the toilet twinning)  coming along?  I have had some come back last week and I should like them back by 30th January. There is a reminder on the bottle - but more of that nearer the time.

Thanks to Mrs Anderson who helped on the 'Parent Rota' last week.  There are still a lot more spaces to fill.  Please do have a look at your diary and see which night you can come along.  It is not hard and it will give you a chance to see how your own child as well as others join in and behave.

Thanks to all of you for paying your back subs. I have to pay the annual insurance bill very soon and at £25+ per child, it will be a large bill!

See you next week for more Fun & Friends

Yellow Beaver's Log Chew for 9th January 2014

Dear Mums., Dads and Beavers

Welcome back to our new term at Beavers.  I hope the Beavers will enjoy themselves

This week, I sent you home a plastic milk bottle to collect 1p coins in -  this is part of our Global Challenge and will help help those in 3rd world countries without a proper toilet lead a healthier life.  I hope we can twin our toilet at Scott House with one abroad before the Easter holidays.  I hope you will agree that it is a worthwhile cause. More information, including a  film clip can be seen on the www.toilettwinning.org website. Please do have a look.  it is quite a humbling experience to watch!.

Thanks to those who signed up to 'The Parent Rota'.  I need to make sure I have 2 other adults each week.  I will ask you to assist me with simple tasks, but if you can't manage, I won't insist! Please do have a look at this when you drop off your child.  It is stuck to the kitchen 'hatch' doors.  If the Rota is not completed for that night, we will not be able to meet.  I am sorry, but Scout Association Rules say that for safety reasons, there must be more than one adult present for the meeting

Congratulations to our new Lodge Leaders: Joe D, Luc & Bill. I am sure they will do a good job.

This coming week, we welcome 3 new Beavers:  Cohen, Owen S & Mitchell and I know that all Beavers will make them welcome.

James, Owen H, Henry & Luke will be invested on 30th January 2014 (so will need their uniform by then please).

Our (delayed) Christmas activity is on Saturday, 1st February 2014 at FUNTASTIC at Workington (Above Wilkinson's & Bingo) from 3.00pm to 5.00pm and the cost is £6.50p.  You will need to organise your own transport to and from the venue.  If Mums/Dads would like to stay with me, that is ok, alternatively, just pick up at the end. If you would like to come, then bring the money this THURSDAY, 16th January so that I can book the places & pay a deposit in advance.  I will then give you a 'permission form' to fill in and return to me before the event takes place.

Please email or call me if you have any queries about this week's Log Chew

Yellow Beaver's Log Chew for 7th November 2013

Dear Mums & Dads and Beavers

Lots to tell you again this week .......................

Well, we have had a busy week this week, first of all Fireworks on Tuesday and tonight our usual meeting.

Tonight we invested Cori, Jay & Aston as Beavers, so that means that all the Beavers are now invested.

We are expecting 5 new Beavers to join us on 21st November and 4 Beavers are starting their link into Cubs, so all change again!

Thank you to everyone who took part in the selling of Grand Draw tickets.  I am not sure of the exact total yet, but I think it is around the £400 mark.  I will give you a confirmed figure as soon as I know it. There is a list of winners on the notice board in the hall as well as in the Co-op and in Heron Foods.

Tonight we made Poppies and talked about Remembrance Day and why we wear poppies.  I hope that you will be able to tell them a little more about it too

This Sunday, along with (hopefully) every one else in the United Kingdom, we will take part in the Remembrance Day Parade, Service and Wreath Laying Ceremony.

We meet at 2.30pm in Fleming Square and then walk to St Mary's Church at Netherhall Corner.  After a short service in Church, to which everyone is invited, we walk over to the Memorial Gardens for the Wreath laying ceremony and 2 minutes silence.

Afterwards there will be refreshments for everyone served in the Rugby Club at Mealpot Road.  I believe that they open the bar as well if you would like to stay for a drink.

The Beavers will be dismissed from there.  Please do not take them away from the Group before then so that we can be sure that everyone is accounted for

Please wear your Beaver uniform and a poppy.  You will probably need a coat on as it will be chilly.  Alternatively, you could wear a thick jumper underneath your Beaver uniform and let everyone see all your lovely badges that you have worked so hard to earn.

Please do try and come along as we will be parading our new Beaver Colony Flag.

Subs - Can I just give you a reminder that if you miss a week, then you do need to pay the back subs when you return.  Thank you

Important!

Next week - 14th November 2013.  There will be no Beaver meeting.

We are back on 21st November 2013 and have 5 more weeks leading up to Christmas.

Our Christmas Good Turn

Last year, we collected food for those less fortunate than ourselves and gave it to the Food Bank.  We collect 200 items.  This year we will be doing the same again.

So, commencing on 21st November, please will you bring non perishable food items (tins of vegetables, fish, fruit, soup, cartons of orange or apple jucie, packets of biscuits, tea bags, sugar, long life milk).  These can be value range, but must be in date.

I will leave a box in the entrance so that you can leave items each week.

I realise that money is tight for families again this year, but if you can spare a £1 a week, it will really make a difference to families in and around Maryport who are desperately having to use the Food Bank and will give them a meal on the table at Christmas time.

Thank you on their behalf and mine too for your continued support.

Yellow Beaver's Log Chew for 31st October 2013

Dear Mums, Dads & Beavers

We hope you enjoyed our 'Fright Halloween Nite' this week.

We played loads of spooky games and each had a bag of Halloween themed sweets and a Halloween themed lucky dip to go home with.  Thank you to everybody, without exception who took the trouble to dress up as it really made it a lovely night. We had 3 costume winners who won suitably gory prizes as well as sweets and a trophy.  I will get the photographs put up on the wall for next week for you all to see.

Next week is going to be busy........

On Tuesday, 5th November 2013, we have the Guy Faulks Firework Night starting at 6.30pm.  We will be joining the Cubs & Scouts.  This is a free event (you do not need to pay subs) and we hope you can come.  This is also the first night for our 4 Beavers to start their Link with Cubs.  Good Luck to them.

Please bring back the Grand Draw tcket Counterfoils & money for the tickets you have sold as it will be drawn during the evening.

Next Thursday, 7th November 2013, we have the Investiture Ceremony for our 4 new Beavers.  The ceremony will be at the beginning and lasts about 5 minutes, so we hope that the Mums, Dads and Grandmas for those new Beavers can come along and watch.  Don't forget to bring your camera!  They will be nervous and so we will want to start on time.

Then, Sunday, 10th November 2013, in common with the rest of the UK, is the Annual Remembrance Day Parade & Wreath Laying ceremony.

Beavers will need to meet Jeff Holiday, Group Scout Leader at the top of Flemming Square at 2.30pm and then the parade sets off at 2.45pm to walk to St Mary's Church (Netherhall Corner) for the Service in the Church.

Immediately after this, everybody crosses the road to the Memorial Gardens and a Wreath is laid at the cenotaph. Please wear a poppy as well as your uniform.  This will be the first time that the Beavers have been able to fly our new Colony Flag and so will be very exciting.

Then everybody walks to the Maryport Rugby Club in Mealpot Road, where tea and biscuits will be served for everyone.  This is where the Beavers will be dismissed from.  For their own safety and for your peace of mind, It is important that they do not leave at any time before this.

Mums and Dads are invited to watch their child in the Parade, join in the service in Church & at the Cenotaph and for refreshments afterwards.

The following Thursday, 14th November 2013, there will be NO BEAVER MEETING and we return the week after on Thursday, 21st November 2013 and meet weekly thereafter up to Christmas as usual.

If you have any queries about any of these events, please ring or email me.  My details are below

Yellow Beaver's Log Chew for 24th October 2013

Hello Mums, Dads & Beavers

I hope that the Beavers enjoyed making their Mummy scary masks and scary pictures last night.

The Beavers are always full of enthusiam for everything we do and make, but these seemed to be particularly well received.  I could not see who I was presenting the badges to under the masks!

I was pleased to present the Air Activity Badges last night.  There are one or two for those who were absent last night which I will pass on in due course.

Next week, although it is Half Term, we will be meeting and having a Halloween Nite with fancy dress.  There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd & 3rd.  You don't have to buy them, you can make them if you wish.  If you don't have time, then a mask or some scary make-up/fake scars etc will do just as well.  I would not like you to feel you cannot come if you are not dressed up.

We will have some really good activities and games to keep us going through the evening.

The following week on Tuesday, 5th November, we will be holding a firework night starting at  6.30pm till 8.00pm.  There will be hot dogs as well.  The Grand Draw will be concluded that night, so if you would like to come along and watch that as well, you are welcome too. (You do not have to pay for this).

This is also the first LINK Evening for Beavers who are going up to Cubs.  Good Luck to you, although you won't be alone as a lot of the Beavers will hopefully be there with you.

Then we are back to Beavers again on Thursday, 7th November.  so you get two lots that week and Yellow Beaver is especially tired!

Please let me have the money and counterfoils back next week, 31st October 2013.

Ticket Selling

We will be selling tickets at the Co-op in Maryport on Saturday, 2nd November.

Can anyone help us sell tickets?

If you can, please call me and let me know.  Even if you can only spare an hour, it helps spread the load.

Thanks for your support

See you looking very scary on 31st October 2013 oooooooooooohhhhhhhh

Yellow Beaver's Log Chew for 15th October 2013

Dear Mums and Dads and Beavers

Hope you enjoyed making our pumpkins, witches and ghosts last week in preparation for our Halloween Nite, which is on Thursday, 31st October 2013.  Although it is the school holiday, we will still be meeting that night.

Please get started on making your Halloween costumes.  I have some spooky prizes for 1st, 2nd & 3rd place.

Thanks for bringing in the egg boxes and please can you continue to bring them as we still need some more.

How is the sale of Draw tickets going?  I have only had 3 sets back so far.  We need them back in good time for counterfoils to be prepared for the Grand Draw, which will take place on Tuesday, 5th November 2013 at Scott House, when we are holding a Group Firework Nite.  Please wear your uniform and bring a warm coat, hat & gloves to put on in case it is cold.  Let's just keep watching the weather forecast to see how freeeeeeezing it might be?

The Air Activities Badges have been flown to me and I shall be presenting them this week, so ..........

Don't forget to be on time this week, see you at 6.25pm for a 6.30pm sharp start.

Yellow Beaver's Log Chew for 10th October 2013

Dear Mums, Dads and Beavers

Last week, we finished the Air Activities Badge

For those who were not there on the night, there will be a little to catch up at home.

We watched a Safety video (the one shown on the aircraft), had a talk by  'Cabin Crew Staff' and then enjoyed an in-flight meal

Badges have been ordered and are on their way!

If there are any badges that you wish to do at home, then it is quite simple.  Just print off the requirements from www.scouts.org.uk (beaver badges) and bring in the sheet signed off by the teacher for that area, i.e. swimming teacher.  For Pet Lover's badge there is a booklet to complete, which could not be easier.  Imagination is another easy badge to do, as is the IT Stage 1 Badge.

Please have a look ..........

I am still collecting cardboard egg boxes for later on in the year and would be grateful if you can still keep sending these in each week.

I gave out the Draw Tickets last week with an explanatory letter. The tickets are £1.00 each.  Each family have been given £10.00 worth of tickets to sell and we would be grateful to have the counterfoils and money back before the end of October as the draw will take place on 5th November 2013.

The Halloween Nite for Beavers is in the Half Term holiday.  I just wanted to confirm that this is the case and it is not a mistake with the date.

If you are aware of any children who want to put their names down on the waiting list, please let me have their details. The names need to go down as early as possible to ensure that they start on their 6th birthday.  Because we are a very popular Beaver Scout Colony, we always have a long list.

Please can you put your child's name inside their scarf.  It will help them find it at the end of the evening.

See you bright and early on Thursday,
