SOME FEEDBACK FROM CURRENT MEMBERS AND SOME

WHO HAVE JOINED UNIVERSITY LIFE in 2024

Former Scout who is now at University

“Throughout my 13 years in scouts 2nd Maryport and Scott House has felt like a second home. The effort and dedication shown from leaders and volunteers is truly inspiring to me. The friendliness and encouragement given to me throughout my time in each level of the scouting organisation has helped build up my own confidence and has undoubtably helped me in my life. Maryport scouts was also a huge driving factor in my career as a primary teacher, with the groups young leader initiative introducing me to my love for teaching and working with children. In addition to this, the community feel of the group and the support they give to Maryport as a whole is also something of note with 4 generations of my family passing through and loving their time with 2nd Maryport.

Mike and his fellow leaders have had an impact on my life that I didn't expect when I first started attending at the age of 7 and I am certainly not the only one that has benefitted from their skill sets.

In conclusion, 2nd Maryport has provided me with confidence, resilience, life/social skills and most importantly, friendships that will last a lifetime”

Current Member - Overcoming her fears

“This past year I have been working to battle fears, one of these being boats. Having such a talented group of leaders took me to one who is amazing. Thanks to him, I got the chance to try kayaking - at my own pace - guided by his expertise. At first it was terrifying but because he gave up his weekend we managed successfully to get me to enjoy it.

Besides community projects like litter picking or taking part in the remembrance parade, over the summer in 2024 I was offered one of the limited places at Red Rose camp. My district joined with another from Cumbria leading me to meet some friends I'll keep for a lifetime. From a trip to Liverpool to backwoods cooking, the week really helped me learn how to cook and clean up for myself - skills my parents are very glad for! By far the best activity was the night hike where hundreds of explorer scouts (14-18yrs) were given a map and a confidence talk then let loose in the countryside. I think the trusting relationship in scouts is what makes it so enjoyable since we can take risks.

I could talk for days about how much scouts has done for me so I will finish with this final point. Scouts has a young leader programme which I have been part of for 3 years. It gives us a chance to explore a different role and give back to people by sharing the experiences we loved so much. As part of this I have attended training events where I have met others from such a range of backgrounds and acquired skills which will help me in my future job which has been inspired by working with the squirrels section, as well as first aid training.

Overall scouting has added so much to my life and especially 2nd Maryport feels like my family. There are definitely memories which will stay with me forever."

Scout just gone off to university

"Over the course of the past five years, scouts have helped me tremendously in terms of building connections with others and ‘finding my people’ with shared interests and beliefs. That being said, Second Maryport Scouts especially did this throughout both Covid-19 lockdowns, which I can appreciate were particularly challenging for those of us at school: from seeing friends every day to suddenly hardly allowed beyond the walls of our own homes for months. A sense of solidarity with others was reinforced due to the presence of Zoom meeting online every Friday night, whereby each Explorer Scout would do an interactive activity of their choosing. Despite this being online rather than face-to-face, this can be used to emphasise that sometimes this is all it takes to trigger the ‘togetherness’ spark we were all normally familiar with: understandably bringing us closer post lockdowns. These further highlight how friendship - not only those engrained in scouts, but generically – should never be taken for granted, especially in uncertain times like those."

Existing Member

"I have been a member of Maryport Scouts for over seven years and really enjoy being part of it all. It has allowed me to have the opportunity to meet new people, feel accepted and have a sense of belonging. The activities I've participated in have helped me develop my problem-solving skills and the ability to use my own initiative.

I was really pleased to find out last year that I had been selected for Roverway 2024 which was taking place in Norway and attended by 25,000 other Scouts. The trip took place during a time when I was struggling with some personal issues.

Roverway helped me get through that time and focus on something more positive. It was definitely one of the most challenging things I've ever done, and took me out of my comfort zone, but I will never forget all of the people I met along the way, from countries all over the world.  I have also benefited from the independence it gave myself and my patrol, and the skills I have learnt such as team building.

Scouts offered me an opportunity that I would never have had otherwise, and it has really changed my life for the better!"
